Bangkok Prepares for Upcoming Elections Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Bangkok: Today, Mr. Narong Ruangsri, Permanent Secretary of Bangkok, revealed Bangkok's readiness to manage the upcoming elections for Bangkok Metropolitan Council members and the Governor of Bangkok, to be held on Sunday, June 28, 2026, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. He stated that the Meteorological Department has forecast increased rainfall and heavy rain in some areas of Thailand from June 28 to July 1, 2026. Bangkok and its surrounding areas are expected to experience thunderstorms with a 60-70% chance of rain and heavy rainfall in some locations.

According to Thai News Agency, Bangkok has prepared for the expected increase in rainfall during the election day. Eligible voters are encouraged to plan their travel and bring rain gear to ensure a smooth voting experience throughout the day. The Permanent Secretary of Bangkok also stated that, to reassure the public, Bangkok has prepared an "Emergency Flood Response Plan," assigning the Drainage Department, in conjunction with all 50 district offices, to closely monitor and prepare for rainfall on Election Day.

Key measures to prevent and mitigate flooding on Election Day include preparing the drainage system and pumps, inspecting the readiness of pumping stations, pumping wells, sluice gates, and electrical systems to ensure they are operating at full efficiency. Backup generators, mobile pumping units, and other supporting equipment are also prepared to handle emergencies.

Efforts to reduce the risk of flooding in polling areas involve controlling water levels in canals, ditches, and waterways to maintain them at appropriate levels. Waterway clearing, removal of garbage and obstructions from canals, and inspection and repair of manhole covers, drainage pipes, and water inlet channels are ongoing to ensure they are in good working condition.

Personnel and emergency response units will be deployed to the area, with personnel stationed at pumping stations, flood-prone areas, and emergency response units throughout election day to address flooding problems. Maintenance teams for pumps, electrical systems, and other equipment are prepared to respond immediately if any malfunctions occur.

Continuous monitoring of weather conditions and rainfall patterns will be conducted 24 hours a day. Rain clouds are being tracked via the Drainage Department's radar system, in conjunction with weather forecasts from the Meteorological Department, and close coordination with other Bangkok Metropolitan Administration agencies is being ensured for timely responses to the situation.

After the polls close at 5:00 PM and the vote counting process begins, citizens can conveniently follow and check the results of the Bangkok City Council and Governor elections through the official Bangkok Metropolitan Administration website, which will report unofficial results and provide continuous updates on the progress.

'The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has prepared comprehensive measures to ensure convenience and safety, so that this election will proceed smoothly, despite potential challenges from the weather. We invite all Bangkok residents to come out and exercise their right to vote to collectively determine the future of our capital city,' the Permanent Secretary of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration concluded.
