Bangkok:The Bank of Thailand's Northeastern branch has clarified that there is no need for concern regarding cash transactions of 5 million baht or more, effective from November 1st.
According to Thai News Agency, the Bank of Thailand's Northeastern regional office emphasized that individuals simply need to prepare proof of the source of funds for transactions exceeding 5 million baht. These measures are part of an effort to prevent the use of cash in illegal activities, with regulations set to take effect from November 1, 2026.
Ms. Sarawan Angklomkleaw, Deputy Director of the Bank of Thailand's Northeastern Region Office, assured the public that if money is obtained legitimately, there is no reason for panic. Financial institutions will verify the source and purpose of transactions according to established guidelines.
The guidelines aim to block funds related to illicit activities such as money laundering and online gambling from entering the financial system. They apply to cash transactions conducted through bank branches, covering withdrawals, deposits, currency exchange, and payments, while electronic transactions remain unaffected.
Starting April 1, 2026, cash withdrawals will require verification of transaction purposes and supporting documents. For deposits, currency exchange, and payments, banks will inquire about fund sources and may request documentation to comply with the enhanced due diligence (EDD) process.
Ms. Sarawan reiterated that the measures are not intended to burden the public but to ensure proper scrutiny of cash usage. She also warned against scammers and call center gangs, advising caution in handling personal information and transferring money under pressure or false pretenses.
