Bhumtham Submits Request to Dissolve Parliament Amid Political Unrest

Bangkok: Surawong has revealed that Bhumtham has formally submitted a request to His Majesty for the dissolution of Parliament. This move comes amidst political turbulence, with details of the request pending an official announcement. The primary reason cited for this action is the People’s Party’s (PPP) decision not to join the government due to its minority status, which hampers its ability to proceed effectively.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sorawong Thienthong, Secretary-General of the Pheu Thai Party, disclosed this development following the People’s Party’s recent vote to support Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, as Prime Minister. He mentioned that the Pheu Thai Party is prepared for legislative proceedings and is ready to nominate Nanchai Kasem Nitisiri as its Prime Ministerial candidate should the opportunity arise.

Mr. Sawong elaborated that he was briefed on the process earlier in the day. Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wetchachai has already submitted the request for royal approval to dissolve Parliament. However, Mr. Phumtham is expected to provide further details on the matter. When asked if the request had indeed been submitted, Mr. Sawong confirmed it with a simple, “Yes, sir.”

Mr. Surawong explained that the decision to request the dissolution stems from several reasons. He pointed out the impracticality of the current political situation, noting that the People’s Party initially supported the Bhumjaithai Party’s prime ministerial candidate but has since suspended its support and opted not to join the government. This decision leaves the government with slightly over 130 votes, raising questions about its ability to function effectively. As a Member of Parliament, Mr. Surawong expressed skepticism about the government’s capacity to advance under these circumstances.

When reporters inquired about potential concerns regarding the dissolution of Parliament, given that many parties have objected to the proposal, Mr. Sorawong expressed confidence in the decision. He stated that the Pheu Thai Party’s legal team holds a different opinion on the matter, and affirmed that Mr. Phumtham has already taken the necessary action.
