Bangkok: Passengers using the Khlong Saen Saep boat service have expressed concerns over a recent fare increase of 2 baht, which they say is making travel almost unaffordable. Regular commuters are feeling the pinch as the added cost compounds the already rising cost of living, leaving some to question the affordability of public transportation.
According to Thai News Agency, the fare increase, which was implemented by Krobkrua Transport Co., Ltd., affects over 30,000 daily users of the Khlong Saen Saep boats. The company raised fares from 11-21 baht to 13-23 baht depending on the distance traveled, citing rising fuel prices as the reason for the adjustment. Notices of the fare change have been posted at piers to inform passengers in advance.
Field surveys indicate varying responses from passengers. One long-time user, who travels daily from Ramkhamhaeng 81 to Pratunam, noted that their daily travel cost has risen to 21 baht per trip, totaling 42 baht for a round trip. This increase, they argue, is significant when considering the stagnant nature of their income and the overall rise in living expenses. With additional costs from school fees looming, they urge the government to better regulate prices, as many essentials are becoming costlier despite official price controls.
Another passenger, who uses the boat service less frequently, mentioned that they prepared 23 baht for their trip to the end of the line. They accept the price hike, recognizing it as a result of market forces. However, they also highlighted the need for more comprehensive and affordable public transport options to better serve the public.
Some passengers are adapting by using alternative means of transport, such as cycling, to cope with the energy crisis. These users agree with the government's push for public transportation but stress the need for it to be more convenient and cost-effective.
The fare increase for the Saen Saep canal boats is linked to diesel prices exceeding 35 baht, with the company planning to reassess the situation by April 6th, 2026. Should fuel prices remain high, another fare hike may be considered, to be announced and implemented in a tiered manner.
In a similar situation, the Chao Phraya Express Boat service at Tha Tien pier also saw a 2 baht fare increase. Regular commuters are feeling the financial strain, while tourists continue to use the service largely unaffected. The service provider has assured that any future decreases in oil prices will result in proportional fare reductions.
