Bomb Blast at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City Kills 13

Doha: A bomb blast in an industrial estate in Qatar has killed 13 people. Updates on the powerful explosion at a factory within the Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar on Sunday night indicate 13 deaths and 66 injuries. Qatari government officials confirmed the incident was an accident.

According to Thai News Agency, the explosion occurred at the Bazan natural gas plant, a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing hub in the Ras Laffan Industrial City, approximately 80 kilometers north of Doha. The blast was so powerful that windows rattled and tremors were felt in central Doha. Rescue workers quickly brought the ensuing fire under control. All 13 fatalities were foreign contract workers. The Indian Embassy in Doha confirmed that 12 of the deceased were Indian nationals, while one was a Pakistani worker. The 66 injured included people of various nationalities, including Qatari, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Kenyan, Ghanaian, Tanzanian, Nigerian, and Nepalese.

The Qatari Minister of Energy and the CEO of Qatar Energy confirmed that the explosion was caused by a technical malfunction during the system startup process. It was an internal accident and not related to sabotage or any military attack. The plant had just undergone major maintenance since December 2025 and had only restarted operations two days before the incident. They confirmed that the incident will not affect liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to the global market and will not impact infrastructure at the Ras Laffan port.

The Bazan plant is a gas processing facility that supplies the power grid, local industries, and desalination plants in Qatar, with a maximum production capacity of 1,400 million cubic feet per day.
