Border Patrol Officer Confesses to Fatal Shooting of Motorcycle Taxi Driver

Bangkok: A border patrol officer confessed to the fatal shooting of a motorcycle taxi driver after being interrogated overnight. The incident unfolded when Sergeant Namthap, aged 33, used a 9mm pistol to kill one driver and injure two others before fleeing the scene. Approximately two hours later, he surrendered to investigators at Makkasan Police Station, after which Huai Khwang Police Station investigators took custody of him and conducted a four-hour-long interrogation.

According to Thai News Agency, the interrogation concluded at 9:30 AM, and Sergeant Namthap was subsequently escorted to a detention cell. Before his confinement, his relatives visited him, providing necessary medication for his psychiatric condition, which requires continuous treatment. CCTV footage revealed that the incident began with an argument at a motorcycle taxi stand, where Sergeant Namthap was assaulted by two taxi drivers. In response, he retreated, drew a firearm, and fired multiple shots, resulting in the death of one driver and injuries to two others.

Relatives of Sergeant Namthap stated that the altercation started when they couldn't agree on a fare after he hailed a motorcycle taxi to take him home. The disagreement escalated, leading to a physical confrontation. The relatives emphasized that while Sergeant Namthap has a mental health condition, they believe the incident was a reaction to being attacked rather than a result of his psychiatric issues.

Sergeant Namthap has confessed to the charges, claiming self-defense. Investigators are preparing to present him to the Criminal Court for remand. He faces charges of intentional homicide, attempted homicide, and violations of the Firearms Act.
