BTS Skytrain Ridership Surges During Songkran Festivities

Bangkok: The Department of Rail Transport reported a significant increase in BTS Skytrain users during Songkran Day as large crowds gathered at popular sites such as Silom, Siam, and ICONSIAM for the water festivities.

According to Thai News Agency, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) noted an 11.21% rise in BTS Skytrain ridership compared to the previous year. To cater to the surge, additional trains were deployed to manage the influx of passengers returning to Bangkok on the holiday's final day. Mr. Pichet Kunathamarak, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport, highlighted the success of urban rail services during the ongoing Songkran Festival in 2026, emphasizing the role of these services in managing both local and intercity travel.

The overall rail travel numbers were impressive, with 1,214,494 total rail trips recorded, which was 13.42% higher than estimates. The intercity trains witnessed a shift towards return-to-work travel, with 86,424 passenger-trips recorded despite being 3.47% below estimates. This included 207 train trips, with special services from key locations like Nakhon Ratchasima and Chiang Mai to Bangkok.

The BTS Skytrain system saw a remarkable increase, with 1,128,070 passenger trips, exceeding estimates by 14.96%. Silom Road was a focal point, drawing record-breaking crowds, and prompting heavy traffic at nearby BTS stations. The Gold Line also experienced substantial growth, with a 59.03% increase in passenger numbers due to its proximity to ICONSIAM.

In light of the holiday's conclusion, the SRT has prepared additional carriages and special trains to accommodate returning passengers and prevent congestion, emphasizing safety measures at railway crossings and urging caution among motorists. Enhanced medical protocols are also in place to handle emergencies on trains.

Mr. Pichet commended the efforts of railway staff who ensured smooth and safe travel during the holiday period, allowing citizens to enjoy Songkran celebrations. The SRT remains committed to maintaining safety and efficiency as the festival concludes and normal rail operations resume.
