Bus Terminal Authority Ensures Safe and Fair Transport for Songkran Festival 2026

Bangkok: The Bus Terminal Authority (BTA) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe and fairly priced transportation for travelers returning home for the Songkran Festival 2026.

According to Thai News Agency, the Bus Terminal Company (BKS) is prepared to cater to the public during the festival, focusing on facilitating the safe return of travelers to their hometowns at fair prices.

Mr. Atthawit Rakchamroon, Managing Director of Transport Co., Ltd. (BKS), stated that preparations are underway in line with the Ministry of Transport's policy. BKS has arranged for over 500 new buses, as well as company-owned and leased buses, approximately 6,000 partner-operated buses, and 1,200 additional non-scheduled buses to meet demand and prevent passengers from being stranded. For outbound journeys from April 9-12, 2026, an estimated 160,000-180,000 passengers are expected to travel daily, requiring 7,000-8,000 bus trips per day. For return journeys from April 16-19, 2026, around 120,000 passengers are anticipated to travel daily, using 6,000 bus trips per day.

Safety remains a priority, with buses prepared before departure and drivers required to be physically fit. The Bus Terminal Company (BKT) and its partners are instructed to avoid exploiting passengers through practices such as ticket scalping, overcharging, and overloading. Any operator violating these rules will face disciplinary action to ensure fair service to the public. The BKT and its partners depend on public service for survival.

In response to requests from bus operators regarding fare increases due to rising fuel prices, BKT has engaged in discussions with bus operators and the Department of Land Transport (DLT) to mitigate the impact on the public's cost of living. Compensation will be provided to operators who agree to freeze their fares from April 6th to 19th, 2026, using funds from the Road Safety Fund. After April 20th, 2026, fares will be adjusted according to the resolution of the Central Land Transport Control Committee to reflect rising fuel costs.

Mr. Atthawit assured the public that buses are ready to accommodate travelers returning to their hometowns for Songkran. Those who have booked tickets in advance will have buses available, while those without advance bookings are advised to plan their trips and purchase tickets at the ticket counters on the day of travel. The Bus Terminal is committed to ensuring that everyone reaches their destinations safely.
