Cabinet Approves 2027 Budget Plan to Enhance Oversight of Nine Programs

Bangkok: The Cabinet approved the 2027 budget plan to improve the efficiency of the entire budget system. The plan includes a timeline and restructuring of oversight for nine integrated programs.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, stated that the Cabinet has approved guidelines for preparing the annual budget for fiscal year 2027. The budget calendar has been revised to ensure that the Budget Act can be promulgated by October 1, 2026, to drive the country's economy effectively.

The 2027 budget will address public problems while maintaining fiscal discipline and coping with economic fluctuations. It will employ a zero-base budgeting approach to review project necessities and explore alternative funding, such as public-private partnerships, to alleviate the national budget burden.

The Cabinet has defined the timeline for budget preparation as follows: The Prime Minister delivers the budget policy on April 20, 2026. By May 1, 2026, budget-receiving units prepare their requests. On June 2, 2026, the Cabinet reviews the budget details and opens the floor for public comment. By June 16, 2026, the Cabinet acknowledges public consultation results and approves the draft Budget Act. On June 23, 2026, the draft budget bill is submitted to the House of Representatives. Between July and September 2026, the council considers the matter, and by the end of September 2026, it is submitted to His Majesty the King for promulgation. The budget comes into effect on October 1, 2026.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved revisions to the authority overseeing nine integrated plans for fiscal year 2026 to enhance budget management efficiency and unity. Mr. Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, Mr. Thongsak Thongsri, Mr. Ekniti Nitithanpraphas, Ms. Supajee Suthamphan, Mr. Pakorn Nilprapan, and Mr. Yotchanan Wongswasdi have been delegated responsibilities for various programs, including addressing problems in the southern border provinces, development plans for the Eastern Economic Corridor, and integrated anti-corruption plans.

'Establishing clear timelines and assigning responsibilities for each project will help maximize budget efficiency, ensure funds reach the public quickly, and lead to more tangible implementation of government policies,' said Ms. Lalida.
