Cabinet Approves E-Government Initiative for Driving License Renewal and Antique Car Tax Exemption

Bangkok: The Cabinet has officially approved a new measure allowing citizens to renew their driving licenses without the need to visit the Department of Land Transport physically. This initiative aims to facilitate the process and reduce the burden of expenses and travel time for individuals. The move is part of the government’s commitment to support the Electronic Transactions Act 2022 and the Electronic Government Policy (e-Government), enabling the renewal of driving licenses through an electronic system. This new regulation will take effect 90 days after it is published in the Government Gazette.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Government Spokesperson Mr. Karom Polpornklang announced the approval of this measure as a step towards integrating modern technology into public services. The government is keen on making services more accessible and efficient for its citizens.

In a related development, Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan, another deputy government spokesperson, stated that the Cabinet has also approved measures to promote the importation of antique and classic cars. Under the new rules, customs rates for classic cars are categorized into two groups: those aged 30 years and under 100 years, and those over 100 years old, which are considered antiques and exempt from import customs duties. These classic cars must be imported as complete vehicles with appropriate documentation.

Additionally, the excise tax for antique cars is set at 45 percent of the retail price, with specific conditions such as the car’s value being no less than 2 million baht and the car being at least 30 years old. This initiative is expected to bolster the classic car market and encourage the preservation of automotive heritage.
