Cabinet Approves Thailand-IEA Energy Cooperation Plan for 2026-2027

Bangkok: The Cabinet has lent its support to the Thailand-IEA cooperation plan for 2026-2027, emphasizing energy security and the acceleration of the transition to clean energy.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced the Cabinet's approval of the draft cooperation plan between Thailand's Ministry of Energy and the International Energy Agency (IEA). This plan, proposed by the Ministry of Energy, is set for the years 2026-2027. The Cabinet has also granted authorization to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, or a designated representative, to sign the agreement in Paris, France, on February 17-18, 2026.

The cooperation plan is designed to enhance Thailand's energy capabilities over a two-year period, covering vital areas such as the exchange of energy data and statistics in line with international standards, energy emergency preparedness, promotion of energy efficiency, development of energy policies and models, and expansion of renewable energy. It also focuses on electricity and digital infrastructure, low-carbon energy technologies, and greenhouse gas emission reduction. Additionally, the plan includes regional and global cooperation initiatives, such as the development of a Southeast Asia energy outlook report, ASEAN energy security review, personnel exchange, training, and continuous capacity building in Thailand's energy sector.

This program serves as a policy and academic framework, without imposing binding international legal obligations or commitments on the next cabinet. The Ministry of Energy has already allocated a budget to support these activities, aiming to improve energy sector management and align Thailand's energy policies with global trends.
