Bangkok: Keep an eye out as the Cabinet is expected to decide tomorrow whether Thais can watch the World Cup for free. Tomorrow's Cabinet meeting will focus on an urgent agenda item: the deal for the broadcasting rights of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the goal of making the live broadcasts available for free to Thai viewers.
According to Thai News Agency, sources from the Government House have revealed that at tomorrow's Cabinet meeting, the government will discuss a key agenda item: the live broadcast of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Cabinet meeting must discuss the purchase of the broadcasting rights from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to meet the tight deadline. This is considered an urgent matter because the World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This matter was discussed in the Cabinet because the government has a key policy to promote free access for Thai citizens to watch world-class football matches. This is aimed at bringing joy and inspiring young people to participate in sports, which will have a positive impact on the physical and mental well-being of the nation.
Previously, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the government was trying its best to handle the live broadcast of the World Cup, even though it could not directly purchase the broadcasting rights, but would coordinate with the private sector. Last week, the Prime Minister held discussions with the Chairman of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and revealed that they also discussed the live broadcast of the World Cup. More clarity is expected after tomorrow's Cabinet meeting.
