Bangkok: The recent collision between a train and a bus at the Asoke-Phetchaburi intersection has prompted calls for systemic reforms to prevent future incidents. Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party, extended condolences to the families affected by the tragedy at a shadow cabinet meeting, commending officials for their swift response.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nattapong emphasized the need for systemic prevention measures to avert similar accidents. He urged the government to implement a major overhaul by establishing a "Committee for Investigating Rail Accidents and Incidents," a step mandated by the Rail Transport Act of 2025 but yet to be realized. This committee would conduct impartial investigations, identifying causes and outlining preventative measures without bias.
Mr. Nattapong also advocated for the advancement of the Missing Link railway project, approved by the Cabinet in 2016, to address the hazardous conditions at the intersection. His proposal highlighted the necessity of resolving the physical complexities at the accident-prone location.
The People's Party plans to use the Transportation Committee mechanism, led by Mr. Suphanat Meenchainan, to convene a meeting on May 20, 2026. The meeting will involve various agencies, including the State Railway of Thailand, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, and the Department of Rail Transport, to discuss the incident's details, potential solutions, and enhanced safety measures.
The committee aims to investigate the accident's causes, propose solutions for traffic management, and assess risks at the nearby Ratchaprarop railway crossing. It will also address compensation processes for accident victims, proposing a "One-Stop Service" unit to streamline the coordination of victims' rights and claims.
