Cambodian Gunfire at Chong Chom Border Crossing Sparks Vigilance Among Surin Residents

Surin: Villagers near the Chong Chom border crossing in Surin province have expressed concern over recent gunfire from Cambodian soldiers, perceiving it as a provocation. Although the residents are not in a state of panic, they remain alert and prepared to evacuate should further conflict arise.

According to Thai News Agency, the situation at the border remains stable, but the residents maintain heightened vigilance following the incident. Cambodian soldiers reportedly fired several small arms shots in the Kab Choeng district of Surin province, an action perceived as a regular attempt to incite unrest among the border communities. Despite this, the villagers have not become complacent and are ready to evacuate immediately if necessary.

In a related development, the Eastern Command, in cooperation with paramilitary forces, conducted a patrol last night in a high-risk area between checkpoints S.41 and S.42 in Ban Ang Sila, Sa Kaeo Province. They intercepted eight individuals, including Pakistani, Chinese, and Thai nationals, who were fleeing from an exploitative work situation in Poipet, Cambodia. The individuals had been deceived into working without pay for over five months.

Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiyapan, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy, reported the arrest of two Thai women in Ban Nam Sap, Chanthaburi Province. The women had returned illegally from Cambodia after being tricked into working for a now-defunct business. They paid a syndicate to facilitate their return, but were apprehended by authorities, while the facilitator evaded capture.

Rear Admiral Surasan Kongsiri, spokesman for the Ministry of Defence, assured that the Thai government and Defence Ministry are closely monitoring the border situation. The Suranaree Task Force remains in control and is committed to safeguarding the border communities. The measures being implemented vary in severity, aligning with the evolving situation, and prioritize patience, restraint, and strict adherence to mutual agreements and international laws. The Thai armed forces are prepared to defend national sovereignty and ensure the safety of the Thai people against any threats.
