Cambodian IED Discovered in Surin Province: Thai Army on High Alert

Surin: The general situation in seven provinces remains normal following the discovery of a Cambodian improvised explosive device (IED) in Surin Province yesterday. Officials successfully defused the device, and the situation is reportedly under control. This morning, the Center for the Prevention and Suppression of Infection (COP) convened a meeting to assess the current status and deliberate on proposals for constructing a fence along the Thai-Cambodian border.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office and the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Administration Center (TCASAC), provided a summary of the conditions at 11 border points across seven provinces. He stated that while the Thai Army remains vigilant and continues to monitor the situation around the clock, the situation is generally stable.

Mr. Jirayu confirmed that the 2nd Army Region discovered an IED near Prasat Ta Kwai in Surin Province. Investigations indicated that the device was of Cambodian origin, with evidence suggesting that Cambodian soldiers had planted it on Thai soil. Furthermore, Cambodian military activities were observed, including the deployment of reconnaissance drones in the Chong An Ma, Satta Phasom-Phu Phi-Don Tuan, and Chong Sai Taku areas. Thai authorities responded by deploying anti-drone systems to counter any breaches of sovereignty.

In response, the Ministry of Defense has directed the military and security agencies to gather evidence and present it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a formal diplomatic protest to the Cambodian government. Continuous patrols have been intensified to prevent further illegal activities and ensure the safety of residents in the border areas.

Mr. Jirayu also noted that a meeting chaired by General Nattapol Nakphanit, Deputy Minister of Defense and Director of the Border Situation Administration Center (BSSA), is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the National Security Council Office. The 31st meeting of the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Administration Center (BSAAC) will evaluate the situation and consider the construction of a border fence in Sa Kaeo Province. The agenda includes addressing technological crimes, human trafficking, and monitoring progress in resolving the migrant labor issue.

Mr. Jirayu emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to monitoring the Thai-Cambodian border, ensuring citizen safety in the seven provinces, and responding to Cambodian protests through diplomatic means. The government remains prepared to take military action if Thai sovereignty is compromised.
