Bangkok: The Director-General of the Army's Information Department has raised concerns about Cambodia's recent arms purchase, suggesting it could lead to a third round of military confrontations.
According to Thai News Agency, the Army's Chief of Information has indicated that Cambodia's procurement of weapons from Eastern Europe, coupled with the upcoming 2027 elections, could signal the possibility of renewed tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border.
Lieutenant General Theeranun Nanthakhwang, who leads the Army Information Department, emphasized the importance of vigilance among Thai soldiers, urging them not to become complacent. He noted that while the current situation on the border appears to be less confrontational, with a shift towards international law and diplomatic encirclement, the potential for conflict remains, overshadowed by global tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
The key factors contributing to this potential threat include Cambodia's substantial arms acquisition and the political landscape shaped by the approaching elections. Although immediate conflict does not seem imminent, these developments are seen as indicators of possible future hostilities.
The coming months, particularly after the rainy season, are crucial as they may determine the trajectory of relations between the two nations. The Thai military is advised to enhance training based on previous experiences and to ensure that forces are well-prepared and equipped for any potential escalation.
