Car Mob Protest Sparks Concerns Over Potential Bangkok Shutdown

Bangkok:A car mob protest has emerged as a significant concern for the government, with political observer Thepthai Senpong urging Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's administration not to underestimate the situation. The protest, initiated due to high fuel prices and other grievances, threatens to paralyze Bangkok if demands are not met.

According to Thai News Agency, Thepthai cautioned that the protest could gain momentum as participants from various provinces join forces with those in Bangkok, potentially causing massive traffic disruptions. The protesters, led by Kamnan Mano, headman of Krabi Noi Subdistrict, are demanding a 10 baht reduction in gasoline prices and prioritization of the drug epidemic as a national issue.

The People's Revolutionary Front for the Protection of the Nation (PRNF) has outlined four main demands, including addressing election fraud and corruption in civil service recruitments. However, their primary focus remains on reducing fuel prices and tackling the drug problem. Despite these pressing issues, Prime Minister Anutin's public statements have not conveyed a concrete plan to address the protesters' demands.

Observers note that the protest is a grassroots movement, not backed by any political party, which may have led the government to underestimate its significance. The involvement of Bangkok residents, who might join the protest with their vehicles, could exacerbate traffic congestion, leading to a potential shutdown of the city.

Thepthai emphasized the need for the government to engage with the protesters and find solutions to their demands, particularly regarding fuel prices. Failure to do so could result in the protest continuing indefinitely, with protesters prepared to camp out until their conditions are met.
