Car Polishing Effective for Shallow Scratches, but Not a Cure-All

Siena:First paragraph of the news story.

According to Thai News Agency, car polishing is often suggested as a solution to scratches, swirl marks, or dullness in car paint, but its effectiveness varies depending on the depth of the damage. Polishing can help remove or fade shallow scratches in the clear coat, the outermost layer that protects the paint. This process involves using polishing compounds and equipment to slightly reduce the lacquer layer, thereby smoothing the surface and making minor scratches less visible.

However, for deep scratches that penetrate beyond the clear coat into the paint, primer, or metal, polishing is not sufficient. Attempting to sand away deep scratches may thin the lacquer layer excessively and damage the actual paint. In such cases, it is necessary to use touch-up painting or spot repainting to address the damage effectively.

While some believe that frequent polishing keeps a car looking new, it is important to note that polishing removes part of the lacquer layer. If done too often or with excessive force, this can lead to thinning of the protective layer, resulting in fading, loss of shine, or peeling over time. It is also important to distinguish between polishing, which removes an uneven surface layer, and processes like waxing or coating, which add a protective layer without removing paint.

Car polishing does offer certain advantages, such as removing stubborn stains or embedded dirt and preparing the surface for additional treatments like glass or ceramic coatings. However, it is recommended to polish only when necessary and to have it done by professionals to avoid improper techniques that could damage the paint. Car polishing is an effective method for restoring shine and eliminating shallow scratches but should be performed with caution to maintain the integrity of the vehicle's paint.
