Chaichana Dechdecho to Challenge Government on Energy Prices and Decentralization Policies

Bangkok: "Chai???" is set to question the government on its policies related to energy prices, future commodity price preparedness, educational inequality, hospital losses, and decentralization. Mr. Chaichana Dechdecho, a list MP from the Democrat Party and deputy party leader, has outlined his concerns ahead of the policy statement to Parliament scheduled for April 9-10.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaichana plans to scrutinize the government's urgent policies addressing energy issues and rising commodity prices, prompted by escalating oil prices. The Democrat Party seeks clarity on the measures being implemented to control high energy and commodity prices, and the government's strategies for managing situations when oil prices decrease, particularly if businesses resist lowering their prices.

Mr. Chaichana will also address the government's public health policies, notably the universal health coverage scheme, which has resulted in hospitals operating at a loss due to coverage of medical costs below actual expenses. Additionally, he aims to challenge the government on educational disparities, emphasizing deficiencies in school infrastructure, teaching equipment, and educational personnel.

Decentralization remains another focal point, where Mr. Chaichana argues that despite longstanding discussions, meaningful progress has been lacking. He advocates for increasing the budget allocation for local governments from the current 29% to 40%, in accordance with efforts initiated in 1999. He also intends to question the government's handling of local administrative power structures, given the Senate's rejection of a draft law on the matter.

Economic challenges, transnational crime suppression, and national security, including border issues and threats from international scammers, are additional areas of concern for Mr. Chaichana. Furthermore, he seeks clarification on the government's "Half-Price Plus" policy, questioning whether it aligns with campaign promises made by the Bhumjaithai Party and the Pheu Thai Party.
