Bangkok: Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, leader of the Rak Chart Party and candidate for prime minister, has urged Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to address pressing social security issues while campaigning at Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market. Chaiwut, accompanied by party members including Mr. Wasim Khan, Ms. Chutikarn Suwannakhot, and Mr. Pin Chaengchawai, was canvassing for Mr. Sirames Sukakulworaset, a candidate for Bangkok Constituency 31.
According to Thai News Agency, the campaign event was marked by the presence of "Por" Punyavee Sukakulvoraset, a popular news anchor and wife of Mr. Sirames, who engaged with locals and tourists, boosting the campaign's visibility. The Rak Chart Party team, under the leadership of Ms. Chutikarn, also took the opportunity to promote the floating market and provide information to tourists.
During his visit, Mr. Chaiwut highlighted concerns expressed by the public regarding the Social Security Fund. He emphasized that insured individuals often feel their benefits are inferior to those offered under the Universal Healthcare Coverage scheme, despite their financial contributions. He pointed out specific issues, such as inadequate reimbursement for dental care, suggesting that benefits should better reflect the contributions to the fund.
Mr. Chaiwut also addressed ongoing investigations into alleged corruption within the Social Security Office. He supported efforts to scrutinize the agency but cautioned against politicizing the issue, particularly in light of the recent Social Security Board elections, which he claimed were marred by "block voting" and "collusion."
He stressed the need for the Social Security Board to remain independent of political influence to protect its integrity and urged Prime Minister Anutin to prioritize resolving these issues. Mr. Chaiwut concluded with an appeal to the Prime Minister to leverage his experience as a former Minister of Public Health to safeguard the social security system and restore public confidence.
