Bangkok: “Chalat Khamchuang” has been elected as the 2nd Vice President of the House of Representatives in an uncontested election, securing his position without facing any competitors.
According to Thai News Agency, the House of Representatives convened to elect a replacement for Mr. Paradorn Prisananantakul, who had resigned from the position. Mr. Surawong Thienthong, an MP for Sa Kaeo and Secretary-General of the Pheu Thai Party, nominated Mr. Chalat Khamchuang, an MP for Roi Et from the same party, as the sole candidate for the role. The absence of alternative candidates resulted in a straightforward election.
Upon his election, Mr. Chalat expressed gratitude towards his fellow members for nominating him, emphasizing that his appointment came through normal democratic procedures. He committed to maintaining political neutrality despite his affiliation with the Pheu Thai Party and pledged to focus on making the House of Representatives more engaging and hopeful for the people. Mr. Chalat assured his colleagues that he would diligently support the Speaker in legislative and executive matters, aiming to transform the House into a vibrant and welcoming institution.
Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, Speaker of the House, extended his congratulations to Mr. Chalat, humorously remarking on the intelligence of the House with the new appointment. This sentiment was met with applause from the assembly.
Additionally, Mr. Chatcha Thaiset, an MP for Uthai Thani from the Bhumjaithai Party, congratulated Mr. Chalat on his unopposed election. He noted the absence of competition for the Deputy Speaker position and proposed that this practice become a tradition, highlighting the complexity of the role and its alignment with government interests.
