Bangkok: Chatchart Sittipunt, the Governor of Bangkok, is spearheading a crucial operation to locate a potential oil pipeline leak in the Khlong Toei district. This operation, involving round-the-clock efforts, has necessitated the relocation of residents to temporary shelters to mitigate the impact of the excavation activities.

According to Thai News Agency, the search operation was initiated to examine the drainage system for leaks caused by oil contamination from a pipeline near Chueapleng Road, beneath the Rama III Bridge U-turn. The Governor reported that officials and experts from various agencies have been working tirelessly, excavating the ground and cutting concrete slabs to inspect the pipeline for leaks. Despite encountering heavy rain, the team persisted, drilling approximately two meters deep along the 14-inch high-pressure oil pipeline.

Currently, no definitive leak has been identified, although oil stains and odors have been detected in the area. To ensure safety, officials have sprayed foam to suppress flammable vapors and continue to monitor the situation closely. Further drilling and inspections are planned, with efforts expected to extend to the railway line by noon or afternoon. The pipeline in question, operational for 32 years, transports oil to various depots, including those in airports and Ayutthaya province. Despite the pipe's structural integrity, the high-flow nature necessitates a meticulous investigation to prevent potential hazards.

The Khlong Toei District Office is actively coordinating with local residents to minimize disruption from the ongoing operations, which involve heavy machinery. The area comprises 10 commercial buildings, housing 31 households and 93 residents. While 8 residents have opted to move to temporary shelters, 10 are considering the option, and 75 chose to stay. The oil company involved is covering the relocation expenses. To facilitate the operation, a command center has been established away from the pipeline, with regular monitoring of oil vapor levels and strict safety measures in place. Governor Chatchart reassured that the situation is under control, with joint operational teams from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and relevant agencies committed to resolving the issue.
