Chiang mai: Chiang Mai is buzzing with activity as people queue to cast their votes. Residents are arriving at polling stations within Chiang Mai University amidst cool weather. Officials are prepared with equipment and facilities to facilitate voters in the upcoming referendum.
According to Thai News Agency, election officials at all four polling stations-stations 49, 50, 51, and 52-have begun preparing equipment and facilities for voters, who will start voting in a few minutes. These four polling stations have a combined total of over 1,700 eligible voters, a significant number of whom are first-time voters, or "new voters." In Chiang Mai, the number of new voters has increased by over 20,000 since the 2023 election, a key factor in this election. Voters have already begun arriving to cast their ballots, including those in the referendum, even before the polls open, reflecting the high level of enthusiasm among Chiang Mai residents for this election.
There are over 1.3 million eligible voters across 10 constituencies and 25 districts, totaling 2,789 polling stations. The areas with the highest number of eligible voters and polling stations are in Constituencies 2 and 3: the gymnasium in Nong Phueng Subdistrict, Saraphi District, and Ban Nong Khong School in Ton Pao Subdistrict, San Kamphaeng District, each with six polling stations and over 3,500 eligible voters.
The polling station with the fewest eligible voters is in Mae Pang Subdistrict, Phrao District, with only 36 people. The Chiang Mai Provincial Election Commission aims for a voter turnout of over 83 percent, an increase from the 82 percent in the 2023 election, and to reduce the number of invalid ballots to just 3 percent from the previous 4 percent.
