Chile Declares State of Emergency in Northern Region Due to Severe Flooding

Tocopilla: Chile has declared a state of disaster in the northern region following heavy rains and mudslides that have ravaged the town of Tocopilla in the Antofagasta region. The severe weather has led to substantial flooding, damaging roads and sweeping away vehicles, necessitating immediate evacuations.

According to Thai News Agency, President Jos© Antonio Cast has announced a state of emergency, categorizing it as a major disaster under the constitution, specifically for Tocopilla province. In response to the crisis, the President has mobilized all available personnel and equipment to provide urgent assistance to the affected population.

In addition, Chile's National Disaster Prevention and Response Agency has heightened the alert level to red in several northern cities, including Antofagasta, Taltal, Mejillones, and Tocopilla. Evacuation orders have been issued for residents in Paposo, a coastal community situated in Taltal, following flash floods and mudslides that have caused severe damage to homes.

Authorities are actively employing heavy machinery to clear and stabilize the mudslide routes. Local residents have voiced concerns about the potential for mudslides to damage homes or endanger lives, particularly as they often occur at night, making it challenging to promptly assess their impact as they descend from the mountains.
