Beijing: China has launched military exercises around disputed reefs in the South China Sea. The People's Liberation Army, through its Southern Operation Command, announced on Saturday that it had initiated joint air and sea exercises around Scarborough Shoal, a contested area in the South China Sea, also known as Huangyan Island.

According to Thai News Agency, the Chinese military stated that the exercise was a necessary measure to counter the actions of some countries that are undermining peace and security in the region. However, the statement did not directly name any countries. The rock formation in question is located in an area that the Philippines claims sovereignty over, known as Bajo de Masinloc. The Philippine Embassy in Beijing has yet to comment on the incident. The Chinese military added that the exercise aimed to test and enhance its readiness to defend its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.

On the same day, Chinese state media reported that the Chinese government had announced a new policy for managing the Huangyan Island National Nature Reserve, established in September 2025. The policy prohibits unauthorized fishing, mining, coral reef and clam harvesting, and other environmentally damaging activities. Violators will face legal penalties. Furthermore, the Chinese military and coast guard will conduct regular patrols around the reserve to crack down on all illegal activities.
