China Dispatches Envoy to Thailand and Cambodia for Border Clash Resolution

Beijing: China’s special envoy for Asian affairs is scheduled to visit both Cambodia and Thailand today to mediate the escalating border clashes. Meanwhile, China insists it is not involved in the clashes between Thai and Cambodian forces along the border, following the Thai military’s seizure of Chinese-made anti-tank missiles from Cambodian troops after clashes on Hill 500.

According to Thai News Agency, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry revealed that Deng Xijun, China’s Special Envoy for Asian Affairs, is scheduled to visit both Cambodia and Thailand today to coordinate with both sides and restore peace as soon as possible.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that, as a neighbor and friend of Cambodia and Thailand, China is concerned about the current border clashes between the two countries. China has been mediating and promoting dialogue, and has played a role in helping to defuse tensions and ease the situation. The Special Envoy for Asian Affairs will travel to Cambodia and Thailand again on Thursday to further mediate, encourage reconciliation, and restore peace as soon as possible.

The website of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand published details of the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson’s response to a reporter’s question during a regular press briefing on Wednesday. The reporter asked about reports that Thai soldiers had seized military equipment, including Chinese-made anti-tank missiles, from Cambodian troops during clashes on the Thai-Cambodian border. The spokesperson responded that China has normal defense cooperation with both Thailand and Cambodia in the past, is not targeting a third country, and is not involved in the Thai-Cambodian border clashes.
