Chuan Leekpai Foresees Strong Support for Abhisit Vejjajiva’s Political Comeback

Bangkok: Chuan Leekpai, a party-list Member of Parliament for the Democrat Party, expressed optimism about Abhisit Vejjajiva’s potential return to leadership. Chuan, speaking before an extraordinary general meeting aimed at electing a new party leader and executive committee, voiced his belief that most supporters view Abhisit as a genuine politician focused on public service rather than personal gain.

According to Thai News Agency, Chuan emphasized that while the party may not be able to immediately restore public confidence, he is hopeful for the outcome of the day’s meeting. He reiterated his support for Abhisit Vejjajiva and mentioned that the decision regarding the executive committee’s composition should be left to Abhisit. Chuan expressed confidence that the meeting would proceed smoothly without significant issues.

Chuan acknowledged that regaining public confidence is not an instantaneous process. He noted that, based on his observations, most people are supportive of Abhisit’s return, despite some criticism from the media. He stressed that changes within the party and Abhisit’s comeback are anticipated to garner widespread support, which he views as essential for the Democrat Party’s progress. Chuan underscored that Abhisit is a politician with a strong role and background, free from personal business interests.

Chuan further remarked that the Democrat Party’s longevity, spanning nearly 80 years, is attributed to its commitment to legitimacy and correctness rather than monetary or political power. He believes this commitment is recognized by the public who follow the roles of political parties.
