Chuan Leekpai Leads Democrat Party’s Northern Campaign with a Focus on Honest Politics

Chiang mai: "Chuan" leads the Democrat Party's campaign in the North, raising the banner of "honest politics" and urging residents of Chiang Mai, Lampang, and Tak to join in stopping the vicious cycle of corruption. On January 19, 2026, Mr. Chuan Leekpai, former leader of the Democrat Party and a party-list MP, intensified his campaign in northern Thailand, starting in Chiang Mai, Lampang, and Tak provinces, to support the party's parliamentary candidates. He emphasized the key selling point of "honesty and integrity," a long-standing trademark of the party.

According to Thai News Agency, the atmosphere in Chiang Mai was lively. Mr. Chuan campaigned in support of "Tae-Narakorn Tiyanon," the candidate for Constituency 1, number 7, by riding in a parade float around the city and giving short speeches at various locations. Mr. Chuan emphasized his experience as a 17-term MP, stating that he "never bought a single vote," and warned the public that vote buying is the beginning of "political business," where politicians ultimately recoup their investment through corruption.

"The Democrat Party may not be the only party that talks about integrity, but we are the party that has made it most tangible, in order to lead the country to prosperity without corruption," Mr. Chuan said.

Meanwhile, Ms. Narakorn won over the villagers with her speech in the local dialect, bringing smiles and laughter with her slogan, "Money comes, we'll laugh, but we'll vote for the Democrat Party," conveying the message that while they could accept the money as a token of goodwill, they shouldn't vote for corrupt individuals, but should instead choose those who are genuinely committed to their work.

During his campaign, Mr. Chuan had a heartwarming encounter with a young tourist who was in Chiang Mai seeking solace from a broken heart. Mr. Chuan offered friendly advice, suggesting, "Let go of the old relationship and come campaign with me instead," bringing smiles to those around him.

Additionally, a woman from southern Thailand living in Chiang Mai came to offer support and affirmed that the Democrat Party is a party that should remain a part of the city because of its sincerity and honesty. She also encouraged the people of Chiang Mai to open their hearts and vote for number 27.

After completing his duties in Chiang Mai, Mr. Chuan traveled to Lampang province to support Ms. Amolya Jentuanich (District 1, No. 7) in a campaign rally in front of the Government Savings Bank market. He then concluded his afternoon mission in Tak province to support Mr. Warit Meechaiyo (District 1, No. 8).

This campaign by the Democrat Party aims to garner votes from people in the northern region to strengthen its support base and improve its bargaining power in pushing forward economic and governance policies under the leadership of Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva.
