Chulaphan Addresses Public Concerns Over Section 112 Appeal Against Thaksin

Bangkok: Chulaphan Amornvivat, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, has expressed that the decision to appeal the Section 112 case against former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is a matter of public concern. He highlighted points raised by Mr. Chuwit Kamolwisit regarding the Attorney General’s decision, noting that while society can question this decision, it should not be viewed as part of a political game.

According to Thai News Agency, the allegations against Mr. Thaksin stem from his interviews with foreign media, which allegedly implicated the monarchy, prompting the Appeals Court’s involvement. Mr. Chulaphan raised concerns about potential political harassment aimed at preventing Mr. Thaksin’s release from prison ahead of the upcoming elections.

Mr. Chulaphan emphasized that the Pheu Thai Party does not wish to politicize this issue further. Although Mr. Chuwit’s observations are deemed questionable, the timing of the appeal during an election period has undeniable political implications. The Pheu Thai Party intends to closely monitor the legal process to assess whether the issue will be investigated or progress further.

Acknowledging the party’s close ties with the Shinawatra family, Mr. Chulaphan stressed the importance of approaching the situation with understanding and empathy. He pointed out that the issue originated from the coup d’©tat during the NCPO era and its subsequent revival under General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s government, contributing to the current state of the justice system.

Mr. Chulaphan reiterated the principle of equal justice for all, urging society to seek clarity on the legal process in terms of facts and procedures. He believes that Mr. Thaksin and his family remain in good spirits and that Mr. Thaksin will continue to exercise his right to defend himself, provided that legal avenues remain open.
