Chulaphan Urges Swift Action for Repatriation of Thai Worker Who Died in South Korea

Bangkok: Mr. Chulaphan Amornvivat, the Minister of Labour, is expediting efforts to assist the family of Mr. Wisanu Laechern, a Thai worker who recently died in South Korea, with the repatriation of his body and ensuring they receive entitled benefits.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chulaphan disclosed that the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul had initially reported the death of Mr. Laechern, a 32-year-old industrial worker from Chiang Rai, who was discovered deceased in his sleep by colleagues in Busan on June 21, 2026. Mr. Laechern, who had been working in South Korea under an E9 visa since January 9, 2024, was the focus of an immediate response by the embassy to manage the situation.

The Royal Thai Embassy is currently collaborating with the Consular Section and waiting for the South Korean police to release autopsy results before a death certificate can be issued. Mr. Laechern's sister has reached out to the Consular Section to initiate the repatriation process, and the Consular Section has provided guidance on the necessary steps. Additionally, the family will receive information about any benefits and assistance they are entitled to.

Mr. Chulaphan also mentioned that the Thai Embassy in Seoul is urgently verifying relevant legal procedures with South Korean agencies. As Mr. Laechern was a member of the fund supporting job seekers abroad, his family is advised to prepare documentation for submission to the Department of Employment to facilitate the approval of assistance as per committee regulations.

The Ministry of Labour has extended its deepest condolences to Mr. Laechern's family and remains committed to offering comprehensive support during this difficult time.
