Bangkok: Social media is circulating claims that switching to an open-type air filter will improve performance and make the car run better.
According to Thai News Agency, the "Sure Before Sharing" program consulted automotive technology experts to clarify this issue and provide information to help you decide on modifying your car.
The difference and advantages of "open air filters" lie in their installation in an open area, as opposed to factory-installed air filters typically enclosed in a sealed box. Open air filters allow air to flow through more easily and in greater volume. In older car models, particularly those from the 1990s, the original air filter design may not be very efficient, and switching to an open-type air filter can significantly improve engine airflow and efficiency. However, for optimal performance, these filters require a well-designed mounting kit to direct cool airflow and prevent engine heat from being drawn in.
Despite these advantages, there are notable disadvantages and precautions associated with open air filters. They often have reduced dust filtration efficiency due to the use of coarser materials, which can allow larger dust particles and debris to enter the engine. Additionally, in congested traffic conditions, open air filters may draw in hot air from the engine compartment, leading to increased engine heat buildup and reduced efficiency. Furthermore, these filters pose a high risk of water entering the engine, especially in conditions involving water spray or driving through flooded areas.
Experts advise that modern cars already have intake manifolds and air filters designed for efficient airflow. Therefore, investing in an aftermarket air filter in a standard, unmodified car may not result in improved performance. Instead, it might only produce louder intake noise, which gives the illusion of increased power, while potentially reducing overall efficiency.
For car owners interested in upgrading their air filtration system, experts recommend choosing a "washable element" aftermarket filter. These offer similar airflow properties to open-type filters but are installed in the factory-installed air filter housing, making them a safer and more suitable option.
In conclusion, the claim that installing an open air filter improves performance is "true, but not entirely." The effect is more noticeable in older car models. However, for newer car models, considering the disadvantages versus the benefits, it's "not worth the cost," and experts do not recommend changing it.
