Collapsed Pagoda at Wat Mai Nong Hoi Temple Triggers Urgent Repairs

Chiang Mai:People are rushing to cover the pagoda with tarpaulins, fearing further damage from rain. Officials in Doi Lo district are working to protect the spire of Wat Mai Nong Hoi temple, which collapsed yesterday, by covering it with tarpaulins to prevent additional rain-induced deterioration.

According to Thai News Agency, initial assessments reveal that more than 80% of the pagoda has collapsed, though the exact cause remains undetermined. Restoration efforts are already underway at the temple.

The incident unfolded dramatically, as the nearly 30-meter-high golden spire of the temple in Santi Suk subdistrict began to tilt, leading to its sudden collapse. Panic ensued among villagers who gathered to observe and discuss the situation, although fortunately, no injuries occurred as no monks were present at the time.

Today, the site remains cluttered with debris, including bricks and cement fragments. Despite the destruction, devotees continue to visit, contributing donations for reconstruction. Wat Mai Nong Hoi is a crucial spiritual hub for surrounding communities.

In response, the district has cordoned off the area for safety, and Mr. Sarunpong Lertphruk, Deputy District Chief of Doi Lo, announced plans to bring in a crane to dismantle the remains of the structure. In the meantime, tarpaulins will be used to shield the site from further rain damage, with this task expected to be completed within two days.

The collapse's cause is still under investigation, with possibilities including rainwater ingress due to structural cracks exacerbated by recent thunderstorms. The temple is encouraging public donations for its restoration efforts.
