Defence Minister Ready for Investigation Into Spoon Found in Soldier’s Ashes

Bangkok: The Minister of Defence has expressed his readiness for an investigation into the unusual discovery of a spoon in the cremated remains of a soldier. He has directed commanders across all branches of the armed forces to prioritize the well-being of soldiers and non-commissioned officers.

According to Thai News Agency, the Minister of Defence, General Natthaphol Nakpanich, addressed the situation involving the ashes of Private Phetcharat Kamlangying, who was part of the 2nd Artillery Regiment, Royal Guard, in Prachinburi Province. Private Kamlangying died from heart failure after collapsing while detained in the 12th Military District prison. General Natthaphol confirmed that a report from the subordinate unit indicated no issues, and they are prepared for further investigation or clarification.

General Natthaphol discussed the protocol regarding inmates carrying utensils, noting a lack of detailed information but acknowledging that soldiers often carry spoons and sometimes glasses. Concerning the potential use of the spoon as a weapon, General Natthaphol stated that this aspect needs further verification by the unit. Initial reports from the unit indicated no problems, and autopsy results revealed no internal injuries. He assured that if the family remains dissatisfied, further investigation will be conducted.

During a Defense Council meeting, General Natthaphol highlighted the need for vigilance in regular military operations to prevent public unease. He reiterated the importance of commanders ensuring issues are promptly addressed to maintain public confidence. He emphasized readiness for investigation and accountability, stating that any evidence of wrongdoing, such as torture, would be addressed according to the Anti-Torture Act and the law. He urged subordinate units to be mindful of their superiors' responsibilities to the public and Parliament, ensuring that actions align with legal standards.
