Defense Technology Act Anniversary Highlights Thailand’s Strategic Push for Self-Reliance

Bangkok: The Ministry of Defence is bolstering support for defense technology, aiming for sustainable self-reliance, industry upgrades, and national income generation. Lieutenant General Adul Boonthamcharoen, Minister of Defence, led a merit-making ceremony marking the 7th anniversary of the Defence Technology Act B.E. 2562 (2019). The event, held at the Defence Technology Institute, was attended by high-ranking security officials and representatives from related agencies.

According to Thai News Agency, the Minister emphasized the importance of defense technology as a key mechanism for national security. It serves as a foundation for developing the defense industry towards sustainable self-reliance. This initiative involves promoting research, development, and innovation to enhance domestic production capabilities, reduce imports, and elevate standards to international competitiveness. Commercializing technologies is also emphasized to create economic value and strengthen Thailand's role in regional and global security supply chains. The event featured research and innovation projects, including unmanned aerial vehicles, tactical simulation systems, and dual-use technologies.

The Ministry of Defence reaffirmed that developing defense technology enhances military capabilities and contributes to long-term security, prosperity, and sustainability, aligning with government policy and national strategy.

The Defence Technology Institute (DTI), established in 2009, focuses on researching and developing military equipment. It has developed key infrastructure and prototypes, including a rocket system with a 10-40 km range, 30 mm ammunition, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The Defense Technology Act B.E. 2562 (2019) marks a significant milestone, enabling DTI to advance the defense industry through research, development, personnel training, and collaboration with government agencies, the private sector, and educational institutions.

A joint venture in the defense industry has been established to enhance the development and production of military equipment. The venture aims to expand the production base, reduce imports, and develop technologies like unmanned aerial vehicle systems, anti-drone systems, guided missiles, and satellite surveillance systems.
