Department of Airports Reports Over 300,000 Songkran Travelers, Reflecting a 14.43% Surge in Thai Tourism

Bangkok: The Department of Airports has announced a significant increase in the number of travelers during this year’s Songkran Festival, with passenger numbers soaring to over 300,000. This marks a 14.43 percent rise, contributing to the robust recovery of Thailand’s tourism sector.

According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Government Spokesperson Ms. Sasikarn Wattanachan shared detailed statistics on airport traffic during the festival period from April 11 to April 17, 2025. The data revealed that 267,368 domestic passengers and 14,035 international passengers utilized the airports, totaling 301,403 travelers. This figure represents a 14.43 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024. The number of flights also saw a rise, with 2,003 domestic and 121 international flights, totaling 2,124 flights, a 12.17 percent increase from the previous year. This data excludes passengers traveling through Thailand’s six major airports, including Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang.

Krabi Airport emerged as the busiest, accommodating 63,523 passengers and 462 flights, followed by Udon Thani Airport with 42,538 passengers and 296 flights, and Khon Kaen Airport with 34,864 passengers and 232 flights. Surat Thani Airport led in air cargo, handling 12,673 kilograms, with Udon Thani and Krabi Airports following.

To manage the increased passenger volume, the Department of Airports implemented comprehensive safety measures and improved public transportation links between airports and city centers. The festival period saw smooth operations with adequate transportation facilities, enhancing passenger convenience and satisfaction. Additionally, a special ‘Living Airport’ initiative was launched to create a lively and welcoming atmosphere for travelers.

Ms. Sasikarn emphasized the government’s dedication to enhancing Thailand’s airport infrastructure to align with international standards, ensuring sustainable growth in the travel and tourism sectors. The government plans to develop efficient infrastructure to facilitate maximum convenience for both citizens and tourists, aiming to establish Thailand as a regional travel hub.
