Department of Business Development Signs MOU to Expand Halal Food Market on Digital Platform

Bangkok: The Department of Business Development (DBD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand and LINE MAN Wongnai to enhance Halal-certified restaurants on digital platforms. This initiative aims to open new markets for high-purchasing Muslim customers, both Thai and international, and establish a credible standard for Thai restaurants on the global stage.

According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Business Development, Ministry of Commerce, organized the MOU signing ceremony to promote and disseminate information on Halal-certified restaurants via digital platforms. This collaboration marks a significant effort to elevate the Thai Halal restaurant industry to international standards, fostering new market opportunities and supporting stable and sustainable growth for the Thai economy. The initiative is focused on adapting the Halal restaurant industry in Thailand to modern demands while maintaining quality standards and creating market-responsive menus.

Ms. Auramon Sapphaweetham, Director-General of the Department of Business Development, emphasized the importance of creating new opportunities for Halal restaurants by adhering to Halal standards. This MOU will involve the Central Committee in standard inspections and certification issuance to build confidence among Muslim consumers in Thailand and abroad. Sales channels will be expanded through the Line Man platform to increase the accessibility of Halal restaurants to Muslims, providing consumers with more options. The Department aims to professionally develop Halal restaurants with certification, enhance their reputation, and coordinate with relevant government agencies for comprehensive development.

The global Muslim population surpassed 1.907 billion by 2024, representing 23.5% of the global population, and is expected to grow to over 2.761 billion by 2050, indicating significant market potential. The global halal food market is on a growth trajectory, projected to exceed US$2 trillion by 2025 and reaching US$3 trillion soon after. This growth presents a lucrative opportunity for Thai businesses to capitalize on the expanding halal food market, which appeals to consumers focused on quality, cleanliness, and food safety. Certification as a quality seal enhances restaurant credibility, enabling competition in domestic and international markets.

Police Major General Surin Palare, Secretary-General of the Central Islamic Council of Thailand, highlighted that Halal certification is crucial for meeting religious needs and is a valuable tool for building confidence and adding value to the restaurant business, thus strengthening Thailand’s Halal economy.

Mr. Yod Chinsupakul, CEO of LINE MAN Wongnai, stated that the company is dedicated to advancing the Thai restaurant industry through this collaboration. As a leading on-demand platform and restaurant information provider, LINE MAN Wongnai aims to elevate Thai Halal restaurant operators on digital platforms. With over 70% of Halal-certified restaurants already on the platform, plans are in place to expand service areas across all 77 provinces to reach a broader Muslim consumer base. This collaboration aligns with the company’s mission to provide access to food that meets the diverse needs and lifestyles of Thais.
