According to Thai News Agency, concerns have been raised regarding the release of Mr. Lao Ta Saenli, a former key drug trafficking convict, who was released from Bang Kwang Central Prison on August 14, 2026. The Department of Corrections has issued a statement clarifying that the release followed legal procedures and all necessary protocols.
The department detailed that Mr. Laota Saenli, aged 85, was convicted of conspiracy to commit serious drug-related offenses and had been detained since October 11, 2016. The Criminal Court's final judgment on December 12, 2019, sentenced him to life imprisonment and a fine of 2,500,000 baht. Being a first-time offender, he was classified as a new convicted prisoner (middle class) under the Ministry of Justice Regulations 2016, Article 20, and did not fall under the Ministerial Regulations on the Benefits of Convicted Prisoners 2019, Article 3 (5).
