Department of Internal Trade Launches Nationwide Crackdown on Underfilled LPG Cylinders

Bangkok: The Department of Internal Trade has initiated a comprehensive crackdown on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bottling plants and retail outlets across the country in response to complaints regarding rapid gas depletion. Fines ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 baht per establishment will be enforced, alongside legal proceedings. The department has stressed that exploiting the public amidst high living costs is unacceptable.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Yanee Srimanee, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, has directed officials to conduct inspections of bottling plants, wholesalers, and retailers nationwide. The aim is to prevent underfilled gas cylinders and to ensure fairness for consumers.

Inspections have uncovered violations in several regions. Gas filling plants in Nonthaburi and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya provinces were found with 57 underfilled gas cylinders. Legal proceedings have been initiated under the Weights and Measures Act B.E. 2542 (1999) at the Bang Bua Thong and Wang Noi Police Stations.

In the provinces of Yasothon, Khon Kaen, and Chonburi, wholesalers were discovered to be selling both underfilled and overfilled gas cylinders. They have been fined 20,000 baht each, and their goods have been seized with immediate orders for correction. Retailers in Pathum Thani, Chachoengsao, and Satun were penalized 10,000 baht each for selling incomplete gas tanks.

The Deputy Director-General emphasized the seriousness of selling goods with incomplete quantities. Even when goods are sold at controlled prices, insufficient quantities constitute consumer exploitation. Offenders face up to one year of imprisonment or a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both. Sellers face up to six months of imprisonment or a fine of up to 20,000 baht.

To alleviate the financial burden on the public, the Department of Internal Trade has expanded the "Blue Flag Cost of Living Reduction" project from 60 locations to over 500 locations nationwide, offering more affordable goods options.

The public is encouraged to report underfilled gas tanks or unfair sales to the Department of Internal Trade hotline at 1569 or via the Mr.DIT application, available 24/7. It is recommended to provide photos or videos as evidence to facilitate legal proceedings.
