Department of Land Transport Ensures Adequate Bus Services for Songkran Festival Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Bangkok: The Department of Land Transport has confirmed the availability of sufficient vehicles for public travel during the upcoming Songkran festival. This assurance follows an urgent meeting held with bus operators to address concerns over transportation services amidst volatile fuel prices.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting was chaired by Mr. Sorapong Paitoonpong, Director-General of the Department of Land Transport. It included representatives such as Mr. Atthawit Rakchamroon, Managing Director of Transport Co., Ltd. (BKS), and Mr. Pichet Jiamboonseth, President of the Thai Bus Operators Association. The discussions focused on strategies to manage the impact of rising fuel costs on transportation during the festival.

The Director-General emphasized the government's commitment, through the Ministry of Transport, to support both the public and transport operators. Measures have been put in place to ensure that individuals have access to safe and reasonably priced transportation. This includes freezing BKS fares until April 19, 2026, and ensuring the availability of sufficient buses, including additional units and a crackdown on illegal ticket sales.

Key issues discussed with transport operators included maintaining continuity of services and ensuring appropriate ticket pricing. Plans are underway to adjust fares in line with actual fuel costs while balancing economic and social considerations. The Department has also coordinated with PTT Oil and Retail Public Company Limited (OR) and Transport Co., Ltd. (BKS) to reserve adequate fuel supplies for buses.

To further support the fare freeze, funds from the Road Safety Fund will subsidize bus fares, encouraging the use of public transportation. This initiative aims to enhance travel safety and alleviate traffic congestion, aligning with the Ministry of Transport's policy.

Passengers are encouraged to cooperate by providing basic information such as name, surname, and telephone number during their travel on public transport.
