Deputy Commander Confirms Wat Muang Was Not Abandoned; Gold Discovered

Bangkok: Deputy Commander of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has confirmed that Wat Muang, a temple embroiled in a financial scandal, was not abandoned, and some gold has been recovered. The temple’s abbot, Phra Ratcha Wachiraphatthanathorn, known as Chao Khun Narong, is reportedly experiencing memory loss but does not have Alzheimer’s. An investigation into the temple’s finances is ongoing.

According to Thai News Agency, the investigation focuses on the mysterious disappearance of money and gold valued at over 22 million baht from Wat Muang. Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat Pankaew of the CIB stated that the abbot has shown signs of forgetfulness but is starting to recall some details. Consequently, some gold has been found, though the exact amount remains undisclosed. The abbot’s lack of Alzheimer’s was also confirmed.

Pol. Col. Charoonkiat emphasized that the investigation into Wat Muang remains active due to its financial complexities. The authorities are scrutinizing the temple’s accounts and income sources, as well as the management of funds by the abbot, who is solely responsible for financial matters since the temple treasurer lacks authority over monetary management.

In response to queries about the abbot’s potential involvement in filing a false report, Pol. Lt. Col. Charoonkiat indicated that legal action might be taken if evidence of his involvement in any criminal activities is found. The investigation continues to explore the various channels through which money and income entered the temple, and if violations are confirmed, appropriate legal measures will be enforced.
