Deputy National Police Chief Inspects Surin Ammunition Depot Explosion Scene

Surin: Deputy National Police Chief Police General Thatchai Pitanilabutr visited the scene of an explosion at the Border Patrol Police Unit 21's ammunition depot to assess the situation and track the progress of the investigation. The investigation's final results are still pending as the forensic team works to determine the cause.

According to Thai News Agency, the Deputy Commissioner General of Police, alongside Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers, is overseeing the ongoing efforts to secure and clear the area. While the forensic team continues to gather evidence, the deputy commander of Border Patrol Police Unit 21 has confirmed that the incident was not an act of sabotage.

Police General Thatchai noted that the overall security situation at the border in Surin Province is stabilizing. Nevertheless, the police, in collaboration with the military, local authorities, and the public, are maintaining vigilance to prevent any disturbances. The ammunition depot is currently deemed safe, awaiting the final forensic analysis.

Addressing rumors circulating on social media, Pol. Lt. Col. Akraphon Niamsuwan, the Deputy Commander of Border Patrol Police Division 21, dismissed the notion of a suicide drone involvement. He clarified that the characteristics of the explosion did not align with such an attack, further asserting that the fire preceded the explosion, which contradicts sabotage theories. The proximity of the guards at the time of the incident also supports this assessment, though conclusive forensic evidence is still required to establish the cause definitively.
