Bangkok: Diesel consumption in Thailand experienced a 1.4 percent decrease in the first six months of 2025, despite overall fuel consumption rising slightly.
According to Thai News Agency, the average daily fuel consumption from January to June 2025 was 157.69 million liters, marking a 0.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This period saw a notable rise in commercial jet fuel consumption by 11.2 percent and fuel oil by 8.2 percent, while gasoline consumption increased marginally by 0.8 percent. Conversely, LPG use dropped by 3.0 percent and NGV consumption saw a significant decline of 16.0 percent.
Mr. Sarawut Kaewtatip, Director-General of the Department of Energy Business, provided detailed insights into the fuel consumption patterns, noting a shift in gasoline preferences. Gasohol 95’s usage increased due to its reduced price gap with Gasohol 91, while other gasohol variants and gasoline showed a declining trend. The emergence of electric vehicles and increased reliance on electric
trains for mass transit are influencing these changes in gasoline consumption.
Diesel usage at service stations averaged 67.67 million liters per day, reflecting a 1.4 percent decrease. This trend is linked to a contraction in the Shipment Index and a sluggish recovery in private consumption and investment. Despite ongoing export growth, especially to the United States, the manufacturing sector’s growth remains modest. The tourism sector also impacted fuel usage, with a 4.7 percent decrease in foreign visitors, particularly from Northeast Asia.
LPG consumption averaged 17.81 million kg/day, showing a 3.0 percent decrease, driven by declines in the petrochemical and transportation sectors. However, household and industrial LPG consumption saw increases. NGV consumption also declined, aligning with a decrease in registered NGV vehicles and potential closures of NGV service stations.
Oil imports experienced mixed trends, with fuel oil imports decreasing slightly while crude oil imports increased. The export o
f refined oil decreased by 11.1 percent, influenced by reductions in various fuel types, contributing to a total export value of 12,071 million baht per month.
