Doctors Urge People Over 50 to Embrace 15-Minute Post-Meal Walks to Combat Major Diseases

Bangkok: The secret of the "15 minutes after meals" is a critical health tip that doctors are eager to share, especially with individuals over the age of 50. This simple practice could help prevent severe health issues, including the risk of finger amputations.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Supavud Saichue has highlighted the increasing prevalence of "three king diseases"-high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes-among working adults, particularly those approaching or over 50 years old. These conditions are often linked to weight gain and a lack of exercise. As Thais enjoy more holidays than any other nation, stress levels and associated health concerns are on the rise.

Dr. Supawut introduces the 15-minute "Digestive Walk" strategy as a more effective alternative to longer exercise routines. He emphasizes that walking for 15 minutes immediately following each meal is more beneficial in reducing blood sugar levels than a single, prolonged 45-60 minute workout. The practice enables muscles to utilize sugar without relying heavily on insulin, which is crucial in preventing insulin resistance.

The analogy of insulin as a "parking attendant" is used to explain its role in managing blood sugar levels. An overconsumption of sugar can lead to insulin resistance, resulting in severe complications such as gangrene, blindness, or kidney failure. Moreover, excessive insulin production can accelerate cancer cell growth, significantly increasing breast cancer risk among women.

Dr. Supawut advises incorporating specific walking techniques to maximize health benefits. Walking on an empty stomach in the morning can effectively burn stored fat, while post-dinner walks are essential to counteract inactivity. He cautions against lying down immediately after eating, as this can cause glucose spikes and stress the pancreas, heightening the risk of insulin resistance.

Apart from health, Dr. Supavud also examines the geopolitical landscape, focusing on stalled US-Iran negotiations. Despite a 60-day ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's strategic use of mines to control shipping lanes keeps global oil prices high at around $90, complicating efforts to stabilize the market.

Dr. Supawut concludes with a reminder of the importance of investing in personal health. He warns against waiting until reaching old age to realize the value of health over wealth. A simple 15-minute post-meal walk could be the key to avoiding lifelong insulin dependence and ensuring a healthier future.
