Bangkok: Chaiwat Sathavorawichit has announced his resignation from his role as a Member of Parliament (MP) to enter the race for Bangkok Governor. The decision marks a significant shift in his political journey, as he aims to bring changes to the city's governance. Despite regretting the loss of his MP position, Chaiwat views this move as an opportunity to open new doors for both himself and the people of Bangkok. He expressed confidence in the democratic system's potential to drive the city's development, while acknowledging current Governor Chatchart's efforts, albeit citing a lack of a support team to tackle major issues.
According to Thai News Agency, Chaiwat, a party-list MP from the People's Party, along with his successor Mr. Karunpol Thiansuwan, held a press conference to announce his resignation and candidacy. Chaiwat emphasized the difficulty in finding a suitable candidate for the Bangkok election, highlighting the long and careful selection process that led to his nomination. He expressed a strong connection to his role as an MP and sees the governorship as an extension of his commitment to the people of Bangkok. Chaiwat assured that parliamentary work would continue smoothly under Karunpol's leadership, thanks to the cohesive teamwork within the People's Party.
Karunpol elaborated on the party's selection process, noting that candidates were considered both from within and outside the party. The selection criteria included personal and core policies, as well as the ability to collaborate with MPs and city council members. The party recognized the need for cooperation with neighboring provinces to address broader issues affecting Bangkok. Concerns over a potential court ruling involving Mr. Viroj Lakkhanaadisorn influenced their decision to nominate Chaiwat, who is seen as a capable and communicative leader.
Karunpol acknowledged Governor Chatchart Sittipunt's past achievements but emphasized the need for a strong support team to address Bangkok's major infrastructure challenges and budgetary concerns. The People's Party plans to leverage its network, including 33 MPs and city council candidates, to drive progress in Bangkok. Karunpol highlighted the importance of unity and collaboration within the party to push forward significant issues and avoid conflicts.
Chaiwat expressed confidence in his candidacy, despite acknowledging the popularity of Governor Chatchart. He emphasized the party's commitment to presenting a comprehensive agenda for Bangkok's development, offering residents a choice for positive change and improved quality of life. The People's Party aims to demonstrate how Bangkok can thrive under its leadership, setting an example for the rest of Thailand. Chaiwat noted the complexity of securing all 50 Bangkok City Council seats but remains optimistic about the trust placed in the party by Bangkok residents.
