Dr. Mallika Unveils Plan to Revitalize Bangkok’s Nightlife Economy Across 50 Districts

Bangkok: Dr. Mallika Boonmeetrakul Mahasuk, candidate for Bangkok Governor number 14, recently conducted a nighttime survey of Silom Soi 4 and its surrounding areas, responding to complaints from tourists, business owners, and residents about the need for a revival of night markets and economic activities after dark.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Mallika's visit aimed to assess the current economic conditions in major entertainment districts of Bangkok. While restaurants and entertainment venues remain operational, the presence of street vending and night markets has declined, attributed to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's efforts to reorganize sidewalk vendors to improve pedestrian traffic.

Dr. Mallika emphasized Silom's role as a pivotal nightlife district in Thailand, advocating for a systematic approach to manage cleanliness, safety, and commercial zoning. This approach seeks to balance pedestrian rights with economic opportunities for businesses.

Introducing the "Bangkok Night Market in 50 Districts" strategy, Dr. Mallika proposed a model for revitalizing the nighttime economy through designated night market zones. Key components include utilizing digital systems for merchant management, enhancing security with AI cameras and lighting, and ensuring hygiene and waste management standards. This strategy aligns with tourism, restaurants, and public transportation, aiming to expand across all 50 economic zones of Bangkok.

Silom, a vital economic engine for Bangkok's nightlife, hosts office buildings, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues, attracting numerous Thai and international tourists, especially at night. Experts in tourism economics estimate that a systematically developed night market in Silom could generate significant revenue, potentially reaching tens of millions of baht per night and hundreds of millions per month, depending on visitor numbers and management.

Dr. Mallika highlighted that the night economy extends beyond retail, encompassing job creation, income generation, tourism enhancement, and city revitalization. With clear regulations, technology, and collaboration, Bangkok could significantly boost economic value while enhancing the quality of life for both entrepreneurs and citizens.

She reiterated her commitment to advancing the "Bangkok Night Economy" policy, pledging to revive the nightlife economy systematically, starting with Silom as a pilot area before expanding to other economic zones across Bangkok's 50 districts, if elected as Governor.
