According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Nattawut Wongniem, a public law expert, highlighted the pressing issue of sexual harassment in Thai society, particularly when it involves public figures like Members of Parliament. He noted that many victims often refrain from reporting incidents due to shame and the potential impact on their personal lives. Dr. Nat underscored the need for decisive legal action in such cases, referencing Supreme Court rulings that have set precedents in dealing with sexual harassment.
The case of former MP Thitsana or Kaewta Chunhawan, who has alleged harassment by a fellow MP, raises significant concerns. Party leadership is accused of previously concealing these allegations and failing to act according to party regulations. Dr. Nat stated that if the allegations are substantiated, and if the statute of limitations has not lapsed, criminal charges can still be pursued, particularly for offenses involving personal liberty violations and unlawful detention.
Dr. Nat, who holds a top executive position in the OMNIX Group, has expressed readiness to assist victims of such harassment. He stated that his law firm is willing to provide free legal aid to Thai citizens who have been sexually harassed or oppressed by government officials. Dr. Nat's call to action includes questioning the inconsistency of the People's Party's response to harassment cases and urging former MP Chunhawan and others affected to seek assistance from his legal team.
In a related issue, Dr. Nat addressed the case of a former Election Commissioner soliciting donations via Facebook for legal defense. He has appealed to the Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration to investigate the legality of this fundraising activity. Dr. Nat warned the public against falling victim to potential scams and illegal solicitations, emphasizing the need for proper authorization for fundraising efforts.
