Bangkok: A river in Bosnia has turned into a garbage dump. Heavy rains and melting snow have led to the accumulation of massive amounts of debris in the Drina River, turning it into a floating garbage dump.
According to Thai News Agency, the Drina River is polluted with a significant amount of garbage, including plastic bottles, cans, and containers. Local activists attribute this recurring issue to the annual rise in river levels caused by rain and melting snow, which washes debris from illegal landfills along the riverbanks in nearby municipalities.
The Drina River, shared by Montenegro, Serbia, and Bosnia, is at the center of this international environmental problem. The countries in the region, still recovering from the economic hardships and conflicts of the 1990s, face financial challenges in addressing this issue. The situation is expected to persist for several years. However, to gain European Union membership, these nations must urgently improve their environmental standards to meet the required criteria.
