Kuala lumpur: Durian-themed restaurants and cafes in Malaysia have become a focal point for global tourists, particularly appealing to visitors from China and Singapore, who are eager to taste the renowned fruit.
According to Thai News Agency, the Malaysian government, in its "Visit Malaysia 2026" campaign, embraced durian as a central attraction under the theme "Surreal Experiences." The initiative aims to draw 47 million tourists by promoting durian, a significant economic fruit, to international travelers. This strategic move has fueled a surge in durian fever across Malaysia, with themed eateries becoming key attractions.
This year, the domestic supply of durian has saturated the market at times, resulting in reduced prices for premium varieties like Musang King in areas such as SS2 in Petaling Jaya. The affordability has led to long queues, positioning the locale as a hotspot for durian enthusiasts. Other prominent tourist spots include Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur, known for its upscale durian cafes, and Bao Sheng Durian Farm in Penang, which offers a unique experience of consuming fresh durian directly from the tree.
Additionally, the prohibition of durian on public transportation and in hotels makes dining at durian-themed restaurants an appealing option for foreign tourists desiring to sample Malaysia's premium durian. These establishments provide an accessible and memorable experience for visitors keen on exploring the country's durian offerings.
