Sa kaeo: The Burapha Task Force is accelerating landmine clearance along the Sa Kaeo border, discovering more "POMZ-2" mines. Over 60,000 square meters of high-risk area remain.
According to Thai News Agency, on March 28, 2026, the Eastern Command, specifically the Humanitarian Mine Action Unit 1 (HMAU 1), commenced operations in a mine clearance area along the Thai-Cambodian border near Ban Nong Chan, Non Mak Mun Subdistrict, Khok Sung District, Sa Kaeo Province. This area is a suspected minefield (SHA 27-01/AD) covering nearly 100,000 square meters. The operation continues to prioritize clearing the high-risk area to ensure public safety.
Yesterday, authorities successfully cleared a 1,000 square meter area using explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) methods and subsequently conducted a technical survey to expand the area by another 2,000 square meters, resulting in a new safe zone of 3,000 square meters. During the clearing process, one POMZ-2 anti-personnel landmine was discovered and safely removed following established procedures.
Regarding the overall operation from November 18, 2025, to the present, officials have successfully secured a total of 39,100 square meters, representing 39.18% of the total area. However, over 60,700 square meters, or 60.82%, remain as suspected and confirmed landmine-containing areas that require urgent action.
According to statistics from bomb disposal operations in the area, a total of 60 explosive devices were found, including 51 PMN anti-personnel mines, 6 MN79 mines, 2 POMZ-2 mines, and 1 unexploded ordnance (UXO). Officials are preparing to intensify operations to reduce risks and ensure the safety of people in the border area.
