Bangkok: Economists are advising the caretaker government to expedite relief efforts for flood-affected areas and take swift action to revitalize the Thai-Cambodian border economy.
According to Thai News Agency, Associate Professor Dr. Anusorn Thamjai, Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the urgency for the government to address these issues amidst political developments.
Dr. Thamjai noted that the government’s proposal to dissolve Parliament follows the People’s Party’s support for the nomination of Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul as Prime Minister, with Parliament preparing for a vote on September 5th. He emphasized that the caretaker government must urgently tackle short-term challenges, particularly those arising from the recent tropical storms Kajiki and Nongfa, which have caused severe flooding across several provinces. The resulting floods and flash floods have significantly impacted businesses and SMEs, causing both direct and indirect damage.
The caretaker government is urged to implement prompt relief measures to mitigate the considerable damage experienced by the people. In addition to flood relief, there is a call to revive the economy along the Thai-Cambodian border, as past damages have hit businesses and the public hard. There is also concern over the anticipated decline in exports in the latter half of the year, as various agencies predict a downturn following the accelerated export activities in the first half due to previous U.S. import tariffs under the Trump administration.
